Tips on Student Finance
Here are some tips for student finances and keeping your costs down while at university:
- While student grants were phased out in 1998, there are still grants and bursaries available to selected courses and individuals. Don't assume that there are none available; look around.
- Don't just budget on essential items (rent, food, utilities) but also on how you spend your time (coffee shops, gym memberships, transportation expenses, etc.) to avoid coming up short every month.
- Lending money to fellow students is not advised, as you might not get it back.
- Avoid applying for a credit card; keep all your expenses simple.
- If you're looking for a part-time job, consider working at the local supermarket or at restaurants to get discounts on food items.
- If you must borrow, look for the cheapest loans available (those with low-interest rates). When you graduate, check the contracts; it doesn't take long for banks to reclaim their money from you.
